The Namib Desert - unique - with a variety of desert landscapes, gives Namibia its essential character. It’s the oldest living desert on earth, where flora and fauna are perfectly adapted to this harsh environment, and where some of the highest accessible dunes in the world can be found.

The Namib Naukluft Park is the largest Nature Reserve in Namibia and many private nature reserves are nestled at its borders to form a unity for wildlife and people alike. Namib Naukluft Lodge & Soft Adventure Camp is located on a unique 25,000 ha Private Nature Reserve which stretches from the Namib Desert to the Naukluft Mountains, bordering to the Namib Naukluft Park on both sides, East and West.

This unique and peaceful place has been carefully developed by its nature loving owners Friedolf and Barbara Sturm and offers a great desert experience for the relaxed holidaymaker and the enthusiastic desert explorer. A large number of animals roam freely and undisturbed over the wide open plains including oryx antelope, kudu, springbok, steenbok, klipspringer, mountain zebra, ostrich and baboon.

During the evenings, the bat-eared fox, the ‘Aardwolf’ and a giant eagle owl are common visitors. Sometimes a spotted or brown hyena may be seen. On a few occasions, predators like the African wildcat, leopard and cheetah have been spotted walking majestically over the vast grassland. A bird-hide in easy walking distance from the lodge invites the keen ornithologist for birding activities. Two black-breasted snake eagles often watch their prey whilst sitting on top of the granite rocks.

This Private Nature Reserve would not be complete without reptiles. Snakes and scorpions are hardly ever seen, but the barking gecko is one, that should be noted. Its clicking sound during the evening hours is a concert never to be forgotten. The beautiful desert night sky, so clear, that you can easily spot the Milky Way and the Southern Cross. Take your time and wait for the perfect shooting star!

THE NAMIB NAUKLUFT LODGE

Namib Naukluft Lodge caters for the individual holidaymaker. Its architectural design allows unity with nature: backed by impressive granite hills, which are granting a natural protection against the East winds. Enjoy the stunning view onto the open plains from every room and the main veranda.

Arrive at Namib Naukluft Lodge after a long drive and the friendly receptionist will welcome you with a drink and a smile. Feel at home and check-into your en-suite, stylishly furnished room with inside and outdoor seating, air-conditioning, private veranda, refrigerator and direct dial telephone.

The main building offers a comfortable lounge exhibiting local decor items as well as original paintings, prints and hand-woven carpets from local artists. Traditional meals are served on the veranda or prepared by the chef on the open fire in the lapa, enhancing the feeling of a very special desert evening.

The bar, and in winter the fireplace, offer a cozy round-up of a great and adventurous day. The early morning hours, when the desert seems to wake-up and stretch, the sun giving its first tender light, it is the ideal time to go for an easy walk. Well marked walking trails lead up the granite hill, around the mountain or to the near-by bird-hide. It is the best time for the keen photographer! There’s even a 9-hole desert golf course offering an experience of a different kind!

During the heat of the day after taking part in one of the excursions the best spot to linger is at the crystal clear swimming pool, which offers a sun-bath as well as a cool splash!

THE SOFT ADVENTURE CAMP

The Soft Adventure Camp has been designed for the nature loving visitor, who wants to experience the undisturbed Namib Desert, without using all the facilities and luxuries of a lodge. The camp is located in the outcrops of the granite hill, and each one of the 15 chalets is individually placed in order to keep the open view onto the plains of the savannah. These fixed structure with canvas partitions offer a spacious interior with en-suite facilities, giving you the feeling of a rustic, close to nature tented camp. Its communal boma offers the facilities of an interactive kitchen, where the preparation for food can be arranged or self-organized.

THE CAMPING SITE

On a secluded area, hidden behind one of the granite hills, is the location of the camping site. Each of the sites has a brick-layered stand - ideal for igloo tents - offering an even base for comfortable camping. There are eight different camping areas, where up to four tents can be placed close to each other. Each of these areas is equipped with its own barbeque fireplace.
There are communal cold water shower and toilet facilities.
