South Africa’s plant life makes it one of 17 Megadiverse countries and 3rd most biodiverse worldwide, has more than 20 000 plant varieties which consist to 10% of the Earth’s known plant species. The most widespread biome is grassland with grasses, small srubs and thorn trees (acacia trees) and the Fynbos Biome, one of 6 floral kingdoms and found in the Western Cape, contains over 9000 species. Fynbos is mostly evergreen and small, needle and fine leaved. The National flower, the protea has 130 different species represented in the Cape.
